The Quba Mosque, situated in Medina, Saudi Arabia, is regarded as the first mosque ever built, established during the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) in the 7th century.
The Prophet himself laid its foundation, and his companions completed the construction. Over the years, it has undergone several renovations, with the current structure being built in the 1980s.
The Prophet’s Arrival in Medina Before it was known as Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah, Medina was called Yathrib. The residents eagerly anticipated the Prophet’s arrival, watching each day for him. One day, a Jewish man spotted a group of travelers in the distance and shouted:
“O people of Arabia! What you have been waiting for has arrived!”
The Muslims hurried to welcome the Prophet , who first stopped at Quba, where many emigrants from Makkah had settled. Some initially confused Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) for the Prophet due to his gray hair, but when they saw him shielding the Prophet with a sheet, they recognized their leader.
